Takenaka and JGC sponsor Yokohama's Tsunagu pavilion: lunar living and domestic SAF

Our take

These follow Obayashi on 20 October and are the 27th and 28th by our count. The domestic SAF that JGC will show is also the fuel planned for the Blue Impulse flyover on opening day, so it turns up both in the sky and in the pavilion.

  • Takenaka Corporation (agreement on 26 October): lends exhibits on improving quality of life in food and housing for long stays on the Moon. The release does not name the exhibits.
  • JGC Holdings (agreement on 27 October): lends exhibits on three efforts: domestic SAF (sustainable aviation fuel), the first to be mass-produced in Japan; “bio-manufacturing”, which uses microbes to make products from CO₂ and forest biomass; and collection boxes for Sullu-p, a clothing collection service run by its subsidiary JGC Digital. JGC says it will announce exhibit details once decided.
  • Mass production of the domestic SAF began in April 2025 at a company JGC and partners set up in 2022. Sullu-p collects clothes through unstaffed boxes in shopping centres and an app, and gives points by weight that can be donated or exchanged for coupons. The English name of the service is our own rendering.
  • The Tsunagu Yokohama Pavilion is the city’s exhibit in Urban GX Village, made up of a Lifestyle Zone and a Future Zone. The city calls these sponsorships “advanced technology exhibits”, and on the pavilion plan the advanced technology experience sits in the Future Zone.

Our take

Living on the Moon now has two sponsors in a row, six days apart. Space-themed sponsorships number three: IHI’s Epsilon rocket in August, Obayashi on 20 October, and now Takenaka. Looking only at construction firms, three major names arrived within a month: the Kajima-led group on 28 September, Obayashi and Takenaka. Kajima’s contribution is CO₂-absorbing concrete, so the space theme comes from Obayashi and Takenaka. Neither release says what the exhibits are, so it is not yet clear how much of the pavilion the Moon will take up.

Of JGC’s three topics, domestic SAF also appears outside the pavilion. According to the 20 October announcement, domestic SAF is planned for the Blue Impulse flyover on opening day. Visitors could watch the flyover and then find the same fuel explained inside the pavilion.

Sullu-p is already part of the city. The collection box in JGC’s release photo is the one at Yokohama Queen’s Tower A in Minatomirai.
