What was announced

  • On 22 September 2026, Takashimaya announced a gold fair, the “Yokohama Dai-Ogon-ten”, in the special event hall on the 8th floor of Yokohama Takashimaya. It runs from Wednesday 30 September to Monday 5 October, open until 7 pm each day (5 pm on the last day), with about 1,000 gold items on display and for sale.
  • Two of them are official GREEN×EXPO 2027 licensed goods. The “K24 EXPO2027 Tunku Tunku koban” weighs about 17 g and measures 7.2 by 4.0 cm, at a planned price of 1,320,000 yen. The “K24 EXPO2027 Tunku Tunku medal” weighs about 15 g and is about 3.0 cm across, at 1,232,000 yen.
  • The fair also has a corner buying gold, silver and platinum, with free valuation.
  • The release does not say how many of the two Tunku Tunku items are available, whether they are sold by lottery or first come, first served, or whether they will be sold elsewhere or online.

Our take

Other Tunku Tunku goods announced in September include a pin badge with Kanagawa’s Kintaro mascot for 715 yen, sold in the same department store. Now the same building will sell a single item costing over a million yen.

Dividing by the stated weights, the koban works out at about 78,000 yen per gram and the medal at about 82,000 yen, so the price per gram is similar. The difference is the form. In the release photos, the koban keeps the fine horizontal lines and fan-shaped stamps of an Edo-period koban, with a round colour picture of Tunku Tunku among flowers set in the middle. The medal has the same picture on the front, ringed by “GREEN×EXPO 2027 YOKOHAMA JAPAN”, and the Expo name on the back. The medal is the one that reads clearly as an Expo souvenir; we think the koban suits people who want the traditional lucky shape.

Takashimaya says it is holding the fair because of demand for gold as a store of value. Licensed goods, however, are priced with the design and craftsmanship included, so they are not priced like bullion of the same weight. We think these are best seen as keepsakes of the Expo rather than as an investment.

Tips for visitors

  • Yokohama Takashimaya is next to the west exit of Yokohama Station. The fair is in the 8th floor event hall and closes at 5 pm on the final day, Monday 5 October.
  • The same store has the “EXPO 2027 Official Store Takashimaya Yokohama”, where everyday Tunku Tunku goods are sold. Other shops are listed in our news on the official pop-up stores.
  • Because the quantity and sales method have not been announced, contact Yokohama Takashimaya before you go if you want to be sure of getting one.
