- Yokohama City announced on 30 September 2026 that its workshops for building its Expo exhibit with residents continue in October. They have run since July. None of the October sessions need booking, though crowding may limit places.
- Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 October, 10:00–17:00, Shin-Yokohama Station west plaza, as part of the Shin-Yokohama Performance 2026 event. For primary and junior-high pupils and their parents. Colour in paper shapes of Yokohama wildlife; the drawings are scanned and you take the paper home. The city will make mobiles from the scans for Tsunagu Yokohama-kan, its pavilion.
- Sunday 25 October, 10:00–16:00, Yokohama City Hall atrium, two workshops:
- A giant “clothes” piece: stitching old fabric together on sewing machines. Anyone who can use a sewing machine may join; no experience needed. The same session ran at Zou-no-hana Terrace on 26–27 September.
- Painting the YOKOHAMA sign for the pavilion’s east wall. For pupils and parents; it ends once the whole sign is painted.
- The clothes piece is one of three large works, with an elephant of bamboo and scrap wood and a flower, about 4 m tall, for the pavilion’s lifestyle zone.
Our take
Something you or your children make will be on show at the Expo. The drawings will hang as mobiles in the pavilion, and the YOKOHAMA sign will go on its east wall. We think the main point of these workshops is that they give families something of their own to look for when they visit.
The 17–18 October venue is right outside Shin-Yokohama Station, served by the shinkansen and the Sotetsu and Tokyu Shin-Yokohama Line, so families from outside the city can drop in too. With no booking and drawings to take home, it fits easily into a visit to the Shin-Yokohama Performance event.
The release does not say where each drawing will go in the mobiles, or if visitors will be able to find their own in the pavilion. The sign painting on the 25th stops once the sign is finished, so arriving late in the day may mean missing it.
Tips for visitors
- Colouring: 17 and 18 October, 10:00 to 17:00, at the Shin-Yokohama Station west plaza, for pupils and their parents.
- Sign painting: 25 October from 10:00 at the Yokohama City Hall atrium. It ends when the sign is fully painted, so go early.
- For the city’s two exhibits and how they got their names, see our report on Yokohama City’s 29 September announcements.
Our take
Children's drawings of Yokohama wildlife will hang in the city's pavilion next year as mobiles. On 25 October at City Hall, visitors can also paint the YOKOHAMA sign for the pavilion's east wall. No booking is needed.
