Yokohama's Expo pavilion now has 18 sponsors, from power-generating windows to CO₂-absorbing concrete

Our take

Yokohama's pavilion now has 18 sponsors, mostly showing technology such as power-generating windows and floating wind turbines. Exhibit locations, opening dates and booking rules have not been announced.

  • On 28 September 2026, the City of Yokohama announced a sponsorship contract with a group led by Kajima Corporation (with Sanwa Energy and Tsurumi Concrete) for its pavilion in the Urban GX Village. The group will provide CO₂-SUICOM, a concrete that absorbs CO₂ as it hardens.
  • That makes 18 sponsors since 13 August, most lending exhibits. Energy: YKK AP (power-generating windows), Toda (floating wind), Takasago (heat storage, hydrogen, algae), Tripod Design (micro power harvesting), JVCKENWOOD (vibration power). Recycling: Mitsubishi Chemical, AGC (window glass), JFE Engineering (food waste), the Sotetsu group (biodiesel buses, food waste), KT Group. Soil and water: Euglena, Nara Kensetsu (aquaponics), MS&AD (rainwater), Shimizu (swift nests). Daily life: IKEA Japan, Sony Music, NYK Line.
  • The pavilion is near the Main Gate. Exhibit locations, opening dates and booking rules are not given.

Our take

Read the 18 names together and construction and engineering firms stand out: Kajima, Shimizu, Toda, Nara Kensetsu, Takasago and JFE. The exhibits are wind turbines at sea, heat storage and concrete, things you would not notice in a city street. We think Yokohama’s pavilion will be the place in this horticultural Expo that shows the systems behind a city rather than plants.

How easy that is to follow depends on each exhibit. The city’s releases say what will be introduced, not how. Only a few, such as JVCKENWOOD’s, where pressing a switch lights up a model of the city, have a known hands-on form. IKEA, MS&AD and Tripod Design will also place exhibits outside the building, so visitors should see those before going in.

The Sotetsu exhibit is the closest to home for rail visitors. Two of the four stations serving the Expo, Seya and Mitsukyo, are on the Sotetsu Line, and the group will show its biodiesel buses and its scheme turning food waste from Sotetsu Rosen supermarkets and Sotetsu hotels into fertiliser.
