As of September 2026, 74 countries and five international organisations have announced participation in GREEN×EXPO 2027 (the 2027 International Horticultural Expo in Yokohama, Kamiseya; 19 March to 26 September 2027). By region, Africa has the most, with 36 countries. We group countries and regions using our own division, based on the regional classification used in United Nations statistics. In this division, North Africa comprises four countries: Arab Republic of Egypt, Kingdom of Morocco, State of Libya and Republic of the Sudan.

As of September 2026, none of the four countries has announced what it will exhibit at GREEN×EXPO 2027. The clues are the farm products and exports listed in each country’s MOFA basic data, and what Japan imports from it. Since this is a horticultural expo, we start by looking at the four countries through their plants and produce. The crops and industries listed in the basic data vary considerably from country to country.

Countries whose basic data lists farm products: Egypt, Sudan, Morocco

Arab Republic of Egypt

Arab Republic of Egypt signed an official participation contract on 26 February 2026 (Association announcement). According to MOFA’s basic data, agriculture accounted for 14% of GDP in FY2023/24, and fruit and vegetables (including processed products) made up 11% of exports (source: 2023, ITC). The largest export category is fuel (mainly natural gas) at 18%, with fruit and vegetables next. On the import side, grain makes up 8%. Japan’s imports from Egypt include food products such as fruit and vegetables, feed, floor coverings and textile products, and clothing; the trade value from Egypt to Japan in FY2025 was ¥12.6 billion (Ministry of Finance trade statistics).

Republic of the Sudan

The Association announced on 18 July 2025 that it had signed an official participation contract with Republic of the Sudan; the signing date has not been made public. According to MOFA’s basic data, the key industries include mining alongside agriculture, forestry, livestock and fisheries; the main export items include edible oil and livestock (sheep), and farm products appear alongside oil and gold (2015, World Bank). The import items also include sugarcane and wheat flour, a different kind of farm product from those on the export side. Sudan’s exports to Japan include plant-based raw materials among other items, and the trade value in 2023 was ¥1.96 billion (Ministry of Finance trade statistics).

Kingdom of Morocco

Kingdom of Morocco signed an official participation contract on 16 June 2026 (Association announcement). MOFA’s basic data lists key industries as agriculture (growing wheat, potatoes, tomatoes, olives, citrus and melons), fisheries (catching octopus, squid and sardines) and mining (producing phosphate rock). Total exports were 469 billion Moroccan dirhams, with items including phosphoric acid, cars, farm products, textiles and leather (2024, Morocco’s Office des Changes). Morocco’s exports to Japan in 2025 (about ¥47.3 billion, Ministry of Finance trade statistics) included food products and seafood (octopus, tuna, squid and others), as well as chemical fertiliser and clothing.

Oil only in the basic data: Libya

State of Libya

Libya was newly added to the GREEN×EXPO Association’s list in the update dated 9 September 2026, but no official participation contract had been signed as of September 2026. The only key industry listed in MOFA’s basic data is oil-related industry; no farm products appear. The main trade items are also without anything corresponding to farm products: exports are oil, natural gas, refined petroleum products, scrap iron and gold; imports are refined petroleum products, cars, broadcasting equipment, tobacco and jewellery. In trade with Japan too, exports to Japan in 2022 were ¥0, with the item listed as “none”, while imports from Japan (cars and general machinery) were ¥5.809 billion (Ministry of Finance trade statistics).

We cover Africa’s other participating countries in separate articles: nine countries in West Africa, seven in Central Africa, seven in the northern part of East Africa, and nine in the Indian Ocean island nations and Southern Africa. Country-by-country signing dates, capitals, populations and languages are collected in our two guides, “Africa (1), Angola to Seychelles” and “Africa (2)”.
