Mika Ninagawa's Expo works: flower beds on the TAISEI GREEN TERRACE and projection mapping on a former powder magazine

Our take

The terrace is about 4.5 metres high with a 90-metre ramp: less a lookout than a walk over photographed and living flowers. The night projection on the former powder magazine could justify an evening ticket (from 17:00, 3,500 yen), but dates and hours are not yet published.

  • On 15 September 2026 the GREEN×EXPO Association revealed for the first time the installations that photographer and film director Mika Ninagawa, the Expo’s official creator, will make inside the venue. There are two, both on the theme “Scenery of the Future for Happiness”.
  • TAISEI GREEN TERRACE: a hill-shaped lookout sponsored and built by the Taisei Corporation group, a Diamond Partner. Flower beds of many species on top, an LED installation underneath, combining the art of Mika Ninagawa with EiM with Taisei’s construction and environmental technology.
  • Bank of Yokohama projection mapping: sponsored by the Bank of Yokohama, film and sound by Mika Ninagawa with EiM projected on the former earth-covered powder magazine that survives inside the venue, as a night-time show.
  • Taisei’s own release the same day: the terrace is a large wooden structure in the centre of the site, near the main event hall, with a ramp about 90 metres long, a viewing height of about 4.5 metres and a floor area of about 800 square metres. It serves as lookout, rest area and walkway. Ninagawa with EiM design the flower beds on top, and the floor carries designs made from Ninagawa’s photographs of flowers. Details of the LED installation will follow.
  • Environmental technology: twelve measures are built in, including recycled timber, solar panels, low-carbon concrete, reuse of rainwater and irrigation water, and planting for biodiversity.
  • Mika Ninagawa with EiM: the name under which Ninagawa works with the creative team EiM, which includes the scientist Hiroaki Miyata, creative director Ko Kuwana and lighting director Kashiro Ueno. Ninagawa has a solo show at the Grand Palais in Paris from 16 December 2026 to 21 March 2027.
  • In Taisei’s release Ninagawa describes layering the flowers she has photographed over the living flowers planted on the spot, so that as you walk the colours shift to blue and white and open onto the real sky.
  • Not stated: whether the terrace needs a ticket or reservation, the dates and hours of the projection show, what the LED installation will show, and when the terrace will be finished.

Our take

Start with the numbers. A viewing height of about 4.5 metres is roughly the floor of a second storey. The ramp is about 90 metres. This is not a tower to survey the grounds from; it is a flower-covered slope you walk up to gain a slightly higher line of sight. Judging by Taisei’s renderings, the point is the walk over photographed and living flowers rather than the view. Ninagawa’s idea, colours turning to blue and white until they meet the sky, needs a ramp of about this length to work.

The second point is the night. The former earth-covered powder magazine is a structure left standing inside the venue, and a projection on it can only be seen after dark. The venue stays open until 21:30, and the evening ticket, valid from 17:00, costs 3,500 yen. Take the Sotetsu Line to Seya or Mitsukyo after work, watch the show and go home: the price makes that a reasonable plan. But the dates and hours are not published. Nightly or weekends only makes a difference to which ticket you buy.

The sponsorship pattern differs too. Taisei, as a Diamond Partner, builds a structure; the Bank of Yokohama backs a show. Unlike the promotion sponsors we have covered (the Osada group, Keikyu and JTB), both leave something visible in the venue.

Tips for visitors

  • For the projection show, the evening ticket (entry from 17:00, 3,500 yen) is the obvious choice. Ticket types are compared in ticket types and how to buy. Wait for the show dates before buying.
  • The venue closes at 21:30. Read our access guide first for the shuttle buses and the four stations, so the trip home late in the evening is planned.
  • The terrace stands in the centre of the site near the main event hall. See where it sits among the other pavilions in our pavilion guide.
  • Taisei’s Expo site (Japanese) will publish the LED contents and the completion date as they are decided.
